Guest Post: South Shore Flooring

I have a guest post here about flooring for your home  from South Shore Flooring! They have covered some great topics and I thought this would be great to share with my readers. When it comes to choosing flooring, it’s not always easy since there are so many options!
Choosing A Flooring That Fits Your Lifestyle And Looks Great

Part of updating any home involves changing the flooring and there are an amazing array of colors,
materials, and styles to choose from, depending on what the homeowner wants. That being said, before
you decide to just choose a floor that looks good, you should take some time and consider your personal
lifestyle to make sure that you make the right choice when it comes to your new flooring.

Size of your household

The size of your household can have a direct impact on how long your flooring will last. Large
households mean that the floor is going to be subjected to a lot of foot traffic and therefore you want
to keep this in mind when you choose flooring material. Laminate flooring is extremely durable and can
be a smart choice in high traffic areas, and in homes where the floor is going to take a lot of abuse. This
flooring type comes in a wide variety of finishes, including wood and stone.

Pets, especially dogs, can cause a lot of problems for flooring. Dogs’ nails can scratch wood surfaces,
spilled water from water dishes can seep into the flooring and cause problems with rot, and then some
dogs will drip water all over a floor surface. Therefore, it would be a good idea to look for a flooring
material that will stand up to pets. Again, laminate can do a good job and there are laminate accessories
that can help you get the most out of this type of flooring. You can also go with natural stone or ceramic
tile if the sound of a dog’s nails, clicking on the surface, will not bother you.

Formal or informal

Aside from the number of people and animals in your home, you also want to give some thought to your
personal style. Do you prefer a formal or informal look? Does your home contain crystal chandeliers
and elaborate window treatments? Does your home have granite countertops and copper sinks? Mixing
formal or informal materials can affect the kind of atmosphere that exists in your home. For instance,
you would not likely want to lay down a linoleum floor in a kitchen that has wood butcher block topped
counters. You would also not choose a stone floor for a kitchen that has composite counters and
cabinets—unless you are intending to renovate the entire space.

Interior style

Interior style is another important element to take into consideration when selecting the type of flooring
that you want. For instance, if you have a country-themed bathroom, you don’t want to select black
granite floor tiles. A wood floor may not work for a kitchen that is modern in design. When shopping for
flooring, bring pictures of the interior with you so that you can compare the samples with your home’s
interior elements. If you are hoping to find a complementary material to cabinets and paint colors, you
can also bring a color swatch or a cabinet door with you to do a physical comparison.

Since flooring has become an important design element in any home, the selection of the material,
color, and design should be undertaken with care. Try to choose something that will complement your
home and remain in style for years to come.

  1. I put a lot of thought into the flooring choices I make for my home. I have been encouraging my husband to have the original floors refinished where possible. They have come out great.

  2. Cheryl Rahkonen says:

We want to replace our old carpet and hardwood floors with laminate flooring. We have been shopping around and I think I have decided on the bamboo flooring – I love it. I would like to get the laminate that looks like tile for the kitchen and hallway. The only thing I have definitely decided on at this point is that we WILL NOT put carpet back in the house and WILL definitely switch to laminate flooring.

  3. Great things to consider. I have wanted to put wood flooring in my home for a while now. I love the look of it, but it will be a while until I do so. Having a dog and a little one (and probably more), it just doesn’t seem like the right time. Hopefully eventually I’ll be able to. For now, I am happy with my tile flooring.

  4. Kathy Lane says:

I have been thinking about getting new flooring, and have been leaning more to the Laminate flooring.I like that there is so many different looks.I didn’t know that it came in a stone look.I have carpet now and it’s getting wore looking.I have 8 grandkids, and my carpet has really taken a beaten.I hope to be able to get new flooring sometime in the coming year.

  5. Right now we are living in a kitchenette and planning to either buy or rent a home in the next few months. I have been checking out flooring …………different types, colors and care. Thank you for the great review.

  6. I re-did all of my downstairs floors with the laminate. I bought a reputable brand but I am sorry that I didn’t just go all in and get real hardwood floors. My floors are VERY noisy and seem to be separaying in more than a few areas. They don’t look nearly as nice as the real thing in my opinion. I spent more than $5000 when all was said and done…
