Recipe: Taco Lettuce Wraps

taco1I LOVE tacos, but being on Nutrisystem I haven’t had them in such a long time. I wanted to make tacos, but without all the calories. I made some taco lettuce wraps instead. They definitely hit the spot and satisfied my craving.

Taco Meat (I make mine with ground chuck, chili powder, cumin, tomato sauce, and Rotel tomatoes w/green chilies)
Lettuce (I used iceburg, but you can use Romaine, butter lettuce, or whatever other lettuce you like)
Low-fat cheese
Low-fat sour cream or Fat free sour cream
Black Olives
and any other toppings you may like.

Let me know if you try them!!! They are so good!

I love eating these. I usually end up ripping off all the superfluous taco that folds over itself just to try to get rid of the calories, but with the lettuce I get all the taste and not the calories. I just recommend making everything fresh, one at a time because, personally, I do not like soggy food and the lettuce can get “nasty” if you leave it sitting with all the taco stuffing inside.

  183. Rebecca Miller says:

I can honestly say I have had hamburger lettuce wraps, and taco salads, but I don’t know why I never thought to do a taco wrap. Thanks for the idea, although I am not a fan of onions but we always place everything separate and put what we like. I am going to try this for dinner.

  192. What a great idea. I will be trying it and pass it on to my family members who are also on various weight loss systems.

  206. Aimee Worley says:

  207. My husband and I eat a low carbohydrate diet. Another thing we do when we want tacos is melt a plate full of flattened out cheddar cheese in the microwave. Let it sit for a minute or two to harden up, and then pick it up and fold it into a taco shell shape. I use my cutting board to shape it since its still hot, and it allows the rest of the grease to drain into the sink. You can throw spices on the cheese as it is melting. I usually throw some cajun on it. Delicious.

Do taco shells have a lot of calories?

We use butter lettuce or red leaf, and top with avocado, onions, and cheese. I need to eat fat and protein (due to a chronic illness) so I use sour cream and regular cheese. I love this type of meal because it can be personalized for each person eating it! I will definitely try your version it sounds so yummy!

  306. Ahhh, this sounds so good right now. I usually don’t go out of my way to make my meal with less carbs than the rest of my (skinny) family’s meals, but you’ve reminded me how easy it can be. I feel a taco night coming up. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  323. This looks awesome… but I would switch the iceberg lettuce for Romaine or another large leaf lettuce since iceberg has no nutritional value.

  324. I’m gluten-free, so I use lettuce instead of bread a lot. I know the thin garden leaf kinds are more nutritious, but the thick iceburg type is best for carrying weight when you use it instead of bread for a wrap or sandwich.

We all love burritos here, they are my weakness as I try to lose weight and deal with the Type 2 Diabetes that runs in my family. We always put spinach leaves or lettuce into our homemade burritos, so this isn’t a far stretch.

  344. sherry butcher says:

  450. wow i love this recipe and i am certainly going to try it soon as i am dieting

  477. These wraps are great. I’ve actually made something similar to this since me and the hubby have gone on a diet to loose the extra baby weight. I’ve made using carnitas (shredded pork) and I love to add some avocado to mine.

  478. Jennifer A. says:

Those look delicious! We do something similar, but we don’t wrap it. We just call it “taco salad”, and throw all taco ingredients into the bowl. To make ours healthier, we get rid of the sour cream (plain greek yogurt can be used as a sour cream substitute, if you like), and use spinach instead of iceberg lettuce. Spinach is an extremely nutrient dense vegetable, so you are getting so many good vitamins and minerals! If spinach is not your thing, there are so many better-for-you leafy greens than iceberg lettuce (which is void of much nutrient). Then for salsa, you can healthy it up by making your own, or just choosing a low sodium, “fresh” made salsa at your grocery store.

We’re also vegetarians, so we exclude the meat, and instead include quinoa (which is a grain, but nutrient dense, with protein), and has a similar texture to hamburger when thrown in. If vegetarian is not your thing, go with the leanest meat you can find, or choose a healthier meat like turkey (try to find low sodium).

We also include other vegetables such as different varieties of onion, and sliced up green pepper! It’s delicious! Taco salad night is a real hit at our household! ๐Ÿ˜€

  479. JJ Caraway says:

  489. My husband and I are on the Keto diet, so we can’t eat carbs. We now eat tacos this way – all wrapped up in a piece of lettuce! It’s delicious and just as flavorful as regular tacos! Yes, it’s a bit messy, but so are taco shells, so there’s really no difference in that respect. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  490. I love the idea of taco wraps using lettuce. Also, using the non-fat and less calorie ingredients such as sour cream just makes the tacos more healthy. I would believe the others in my family will enjoy them as well. A build-your-own dinner is always enjoyable.

  491. Hadn’t thought of using lettuce as the taco shell. We have Taco Tuesdays nearly every week, so I’m always looking for new taco ideas that my family would like. We also skip the seasoning packets and use our own seasonings with a mixture of ground beef, ground turkey, and red lentils.

  492. Melia McVay says:

I love mexican food. I think I could eat it every day. But I don’t know if I could truly enjoy a taco lettuce wrap, as I am not a huge fan of lettuce. I think it is a waste of a food. Maybe if it were a leafier lettuce I would be ok with it but not Iceberg.

I’m not a huge fan of flour or corn tortillas. Thanks for the recipe! This looks like a great weeknight meal!

I have been wanting to try a recipe like this. I am glad to be a part of your blog so I could find the deliciousness! Thank you!

  528. Tacos esp without the shell are a healthier alternative to what some families could be eating! I have a seven yr old and an 11 yr old so when we have the ‘family make your own taco night” it’s pretty fun. we put all the different toppings out in bowls and they can make their tacos however they want. Everyone is happy. The only problem is it usually leaves a big mess of leftover crumbs of meat and cheese etc lol but I don’t mind. I would rather them eating healthy and having fun.

  529. Okay, this would b perfect for when my friend with gluten sensitivity comes over for dinner! All the yum of tacos without the tortilla or taco shell!!

  530. marissa lee says:

  537. OK, it’s not fair at this time of night to make me hungry. This is a wonderful idea. It looks great – good enough to eat. NOW

  562. Jo-Ann Brightman says:

I realize that it is much healthier to use lettuce leaves or spinach leaves and seasoning of the meat gives it that taco taste, but sometimes I want the crunch of the tortilla too. I just will alternate them

  563. This looks delicious and something I can eat. I am on a restricted candida diet and can’t have carbs or sugar or dairy. With just a few tweaks I could have this. Thanks for sharing.
