Top Tips for Improving Your Wine Knowledge

Many of us enjoy a glass of wine with a meal or after a hard day at work, but do you really know your Chardonnay from your Pinot Grigio? Learning more about your favorite tipple can provide you with endless pleasure, and it’s definitely a subject that has a lot to offer its students, especially for working ladies out there who are living in the city.

If you’ve been thinking about improving your wine knowledge, you’ve come to the right place. Here, we share five ways to find out more about the age-old beverage.

Sign up to a class in your local area

Wine classes are becoming increasingly popular at the moment. The great news is, they’re also really fun. A typical class will usually involve sampling several different wines, while being told the story of a particular type of grape or winemaking region. You might also get to sample some canapés that will compliment your drink. This is the sort of knowledge that you can easily apply when you get back home and want to host a dinner party.

Join an internet or mail order wine club

Once you’re in a routine, it’s easy to just grab a bottle of your usual wine when you do your weekly shop. If you want to expand your horizons though, it’s worth joining a club that will send you a different wine to try each and every month. You’ll usually receive tasting notes and some hints and tips for how to best enjoy the drink. These clubs are available online and by mail order. Many have great introductory offers.

Make sure that you have the appropriate glassware and accessories

It’s not all just about the wine. If you’re serious about enjoying it to its full potential, you’ll need to make a few basic investments. Some high quality wine glasses, for example, are necessary for making sure that you taste the drink at its best. You might also want to buy a good corkscrew and even a book or two for reference.

Consider a wine tasting holiday

If you’re really serious about wine, you could even take a holiday dedicated to learning more about it. These usually involve visiting a popular region and seeing how the wine is made, as well as the opportunity to taste it. They tend to be more expensive than your usual holidays, but are a great experience. Take your partner for a really romantic break.

Make yourself a regular at a reputable wine shop

When you regularly visit a wine shop in your area, you’ll get to know the owners and can pick up some excellent tips and knowledge. Locate a few nearby and make a point of calling in for a chat with the staff. They’ll be happy to help you get started with your wine education.

Following these tips, you could find that you’re on the way to being a wine connoisseur in no time at all! It just takes a little patience and willingness to learn.

Do you have an interest in wine? Which of these tips do you follow to improve your knowledge? We’d love to hear your ideas.
