Child Passenger Safety Week

Post on Sept 7th#Sponsored This week is Child Passenger Safety Week, September 15th-21st. If you’re an avid reader of my blog, you will know that Child Safety in car seats/boosters etc is a topic that I’m very passionate about. You can see a detailed post that I did here about car seat safety.

Here are a few facts about Child Passenger Safety Week that I’d like to bring to your attention.
Post on Sept 2nd Post on Sept 9th Post on Sept 10th Post on Sept 12th Post on Sept 20thOn Saturday, September 21st, there will be places throughout the US for you to get your car seat checked to make sure it’s installed correctly. For you to locate a place in your area, check out the Child Car Seat Inspection Station Locator.

Also I want to point out a few facts that are very important when it comes to Child Passenger Safety-
– READ your manual front to back.
– Rear face your child to the minimum age of 2 years.
– When your child is rear facing make sure their straps are at or below their shoulders, when forward facing, make sure their straps are at or above their shoulders.
– Chest clip should be even with the armpits, never on the belly.
– Straps should ALWAYS be snug, you shouldn’t be able to pinch them together, AND make sure they are not twisted.
– Use either LATCH or a seatbelt to install, but NEVER both. Also if installed correctly, your seat should not move more than 1 inch side to side. Make sure to anchor your seat to an anchor point.
– Don’t move your child to the next child seat as a milestone, remember a step to the next child seat, is a step down in safety. Try to keep your child rear facing til age 2, harnessed until age 4 (or even 5 or 6), and in a booster that fits your child properly until at least age 8/9.

Many parents and caregivers move their children to the next restraint type (car seat, booster seat, seat belt) too soon. That’s why hands-on inspections and instruction are so important.

Please keep your child safe and always do that maximum for your child. Keep them in their seat to the maximum limits. We want to do the maximum for our children, not the minimum.

Look for certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians in your community participating in Child Passenger Safety Week. They will be providing free, hands-on car seat education and inspections from September 15-21.
