Choosing the Right Child Car Seat

Safer Driving: Child Car Seats

#Sponsored As a parent, keeping your child safe from harm is probably the most important thing on your mind at any time of day. But sadly, all too often this standard of protection slips when it comes to something we take for granted, something we might do every single day: driving with our kids. Choosing the right kind of car seat for your child is very important.

A recent study of car crashes in the US from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that a third of children killed in accidents weren’t wearing seat belts or using a car seat. While strapping your child into a car seat is no guarantee of safety, it can prove a vital layer of protection for children if the worst happens. Make sure your children are protected when you drive – always use a car seat that’s suitable for your child, properly fitted and correctly adjusted.

Choose the right seat

Almost every car seat on the market uses the ISOFIX interface for fixing the seat to your car. The ISOFIX standard was introduced by BRITAX UK in conjunction with Volkswagen in 1997 and is now an internationally implemented standard in cars across the globe. Compared to car seats that affix to the seat belt, ISOFIX seats ensure correct installation 96% of the time and provide additional anchorage points that reduce the risk of movement during a collision.

Choosing the correct size can make all the difference. Make sure you choose a seat suitable not only for your child’s age, but also their weight – and never use a car seat that’s too large for your child!

Don’t be tempted to cut corners when it comes to choosing a car seat. Quality car seat makers not only meet the legal requirements for safety in car seats, they exceed them; ensuring the very best in protection for your little ones. BRITAX, for example, are the brand of choices for 78% of vehicles tested under the Euro NCAP safety assessments. Britax is our favorite brand here at Everything Mommyhood.

Always buy new

A lot of parents question the advice to always buy car seats new, never second-hand. Considering the cost of raising a child – especially with the seemingly endless stream of big ticket purchases in the early years – it can be tempting to pay a little less for a used car seat – after all, what’s the risk?

But experts caution that cutting corners like this is an invitation for disaster. Even the most pristine-looking second-hand car seat may have been involved in an accident, suffering fractures and stress damage that won’t be immediately visible in a quick inspection. Also, buying older models of car seat means you miss out on the latest safety features and standards that come with brand new types. If you buy a used seat, you never know the condition, in the event of an accident, it may not work properly and could cost your child’s life.
