Child Friendly Bathrooms – A Quick Guide

Having children sadly often means that the bathroom is no longer a haven of whale song and candles with a glass of wine after a stressful day and is, instead, more often a battleground of tantrums and trauma as you try to scrub off paint, mud and whatever else your little angels have accumulated throughout the day.

Decorating when you have children is often about practicality over style and the temptation is to leave decorating or ‘nice things’ until after the children are grown enough that they will not get ruined. Fortunately the bathroom is one space of the house where you can have a stylish space that is also child friendly.

Choose a classic white gloss tile effect for your bathroom and add colour and interest with glass mosaics. Tiles are hardwearing and those with a glossy surface are durable and difficult to mark. Tiles 4 All have a great range online and they are very affordable. The great thing about a white tiled wall is that it is, literally, a blank canvas. You can color with towels and mats, and if you can get hold of some bath crayons, your children can be easily distracted with a whole wall to scribble their pictures and designs on.

Storage is key if you want a space that it is possible to relax in once the kids are tucked up in bed. A bathtub filled with rubber ducks and water windmills is neither relaxing nor decadent. If possible, fitted cupboard spaces that blend with your walls create an illusion of space. Otherwise, opt for a free standing unit. Make sure there is somewhere you can actually shut away all the children’s paraphernalia however; it is tempting to dump it all in a basket or a net hammock, but when you want to unwind, you need a space that is child free.

Candles might be a thing of the past but that doesn’t mean ambient lighting is out of the question. Spa lights are safe and clean and if you opt for simple white ones, they create much the same ambiance as candles would. If you want to grab some brightly colored ones too, the bathtub can easily become an alien spaceship in a darkened bathroom.

Keep your décor classic and budget friendly and simply shut away the children’s toys and get out the luxury towels when you feel like a little ‘me time’; there is no reason you can’t still enjoy a long relaxing soak in a beautiful space and be an adult for a while.
