Starting the Ketogenic Diet: Where Do I Begin and The Essentials I Need

This post may contain affiliate links.

I’ve been researching the ketogenic diet for the past few days. I’ve been sick in bed with strep throat so I’ve had a lot of time on my hands to research. After this Winter, I put on a lot of weight and it’s time to start shedding the weight to get prepped for the Summer. Not only that I have a wedding I’m going to be in this November. I haven’t started the ketogenic diet yet, but I wrote out a ton of information in a notebook so I can be well prepared. It’s a lot of information to take in, and since there are so many diets out there, I think it’s important to know what you’re getting into.

Where do I begin?

Make sure you make a list of ketogenic foods that are allowed that you’re willing to eat.

Make a list of what’s not allowed so you can stay on track.

Get some recipes together, so you’re at least set on some things to make when you’re in a rut.

Make a list of snacks as well, so you’re not scrambling for something once you’re hungry.

Figure out what macros you’re going to need to intake. This is your calories, protein, fat, and carbs. From what I’ve read, Carb Manager is a good app to use.

Check out some books on Amazon.
I’m huge on the InstantPot, so here are a few books I’ve found that I think will be a great help:

The Essentials

Now I can’t tell you first hand, as I’m just starting, but I am buying all these myself as they seem to be the norm for ketogenic diet users. I’m trying to be prepared and since I’ve done my research, I figured I’d try to do some of the leg work for my readers as well. I’d love to hear if you have any more suggestions,  you can sound off below in the comments.

Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar with The Mother

Almond Flour

Pink Salt

Keto Urine Sticks

Smart Water

Powerade Zero

The main thing when doing the Ketogenic diet is to not be dehydrated or you can get the keto flu, you must eat fats and eat very low carbs (I’m staying around 20g), and keep up your electrolytes and salt.

Why the Ketogenic Diet?

I’m sure you’re asking why is this so popular right now. How does it work? The whole diet is based on a process called ketosis, which is when your body is so depleted of carbs that your liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies, which can be used as energy. The ketones replace carbohydrates as your body’s main energy source, meaning you are running on and burning fat. To tell if your body is in a state of ketosis, you can measure your blood or urine for elevated levels of ketones, see the Keto Urine Sticks above. I have several friends who have been on the ketogenic diet for months now and have lost so much weight. I have friends who were morbidly obese who are no longer. The ketogenic diet, isn’t a diet, IT’S A LIFESTYLE!!!

I’d love to hear your tips or recipes and how you have changed your lifestyle to a ketogenic diet. Tell me below.
