We let our good friend Kim, at Life In a House of Testosterone do a guest review on this product, right here at Everything Mommyhood. Read on below for her fabulous review. Stay tuned for our giveaway on July 8th, 2015.
There is absolutely nothing more aggravating than being in the middle of working on a blog post, or my book, or responding to an email on the desktop and then having to stop what I’m doing to prepare dinner or help the kids out with something. What I had been doing was dragging my All-In-One desktop computer from my desk in our bedroom out into the kitchen/dining/living room area so that I was still able to finish what I was doing yet be a part of whatever else was going on in the family area.
That gets old – REALLY QUICK. I dreamed of the day when I could just save whatever I was working on in the cloud and pop into the living room and get on a laptop and resume what I was doing. I have had my eye on a few different systems for some time, and then I had the opportunity to review the Nextbook Flexx 11.
Nextbook Flexx 11 – A Truly Powerful Tablet
This little powerhouse of a tablet is just a fraction of the cost of a Surface Pro 3, and has the capability to do absolutely everything that I need it to do – from writing my book, to creating images for my blog posts, keeping track of finances and preparing invoices via PayPal directly from Excel – this little workhorse does it all and FAST!
Extremely slim – it easily fits into my tote or handbag.
Just to give you a comparison in size – this is my 18.5” LCD Display on the desktop as well as the 11.67” IPS capacitive touch screen on the Nextbook Flexx 11 – both with a 1366×768 display area.
The difference in the screen size did take a moment to become accustomed with, but once I was able to change the font size for the display and make it slightly larger (to aid my failing eyesight) it has been a breeze to work on. I love how the keyboard lights up as well when you connect or disconnect the tablet and power on initially.
To be quite honest – I’ve actually enjoyed working on the Nextbook Flexx 11 more than the desktop lately. The Nextbook Flexx 11 is running the Windows 8.1 operating system (and I’ve already been notified and accepted my reservation for the free upgrade to Windows 10 on July 29, 2015) and has the following amazing features:
- Windows 8.1 operating system (upgradable to Windows 10 in July 2015)
- 6” 1366 x 768 IPS capacitive touch screen
- Quad-Core Intel® AtomTM Z3735G Processor (X86, 1.8GHz)
- 2GB DDR3L system memory; 64GB onboard storage memory
- Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
- 2.0 megapixel front and rear cameras with integrated microphone
- microHDMI, microUSB, and microSD ports
- Preloaded VUDU Movies and TV app; NOOK for Windows 8 app
Handles a Ton of Apps with Ease
I have the complete Office Suite installed, my beloved Corel PaintShopPro X7, I’ve installed Chrome and Firefox browsers, as well as my iTunes and iCloud programs to manage my iPhone. I also have my OneNote and Evernote installed. MyReader is compatible with my Feedly subscriptions, so I can still keep up-to-date on all of the blogs that I enjoy. All of the great articles that I’ve found and saved to Pocket (formerly Read It Later) I can access via the Latermark app. I literally have everything that I need, right at my fingertips. If I need to access any of my work or photographs – I have 1TB of space on OneDrive as well as my Dropbox account. I can save to either of them and have everything I need on any device I’m working on.
Detachable Keyboard and USB Drives
I have never been great with navigating using a built-in mouse pad – I much prefer having an external mouse. There are two USB ports on the keyboard that allow you to plugin any type of USB external drive while the tablet and keyboard are connected. The only complaint that I have had with this system is that, when the tablet is detached from the keyboard, you cannot utilize an external mouse or other device. The keyboard does not operate without being connected to the tablet. I would consider this system absolutely perfect if it would make the keyboard functional without having to be attached to the tablet. I could then pop the tablet in my stand that I purchased for a previous tablet, and have the keyboard on my lap and just go to town doing what needs to be done.
Travel Performance
We recently took a day trip to the beach earlier this month, and the Nextbook Flexx 11 came along. I easily was able to connect to my WiFi hotspot and my son enjoyed playing games from the Windows Store and watching his favorite shows on Netflix. I have a Skype conference call scheduled for later this week that I’ll be doing on the Nextbook Flexx 11 as well. We were easily able to plug the Nextbook Flexx 11 into our travel USB port and charge it in the vehicle. I actually used it to finish some work on the way to the beach while hubby drove.
Great for School
My eldest son is going to begin Virtual Virginia in the fall, an online high school course for students in Virginia. At under $250 and available at your local Walmart store or online at Walmart.com – he will be receiving a Nextbook Flexx 11 of his own to use for school. It is compatible with the PowerSchool and Blackboard systems that our county school system utilizes, and he will be able to track his progress (and so will I from mine) and access additional helpful materials to help him make the grades he needs this year.
Our Rating
As I stated, if the keyboard was functional while detached from the tablet, I would give the system a 5-star rating. Since it is not, I give it a 4.5-star rating. I seriously urge you to check out the Nextbook Flex 11 before investing hundreds of dollars in another system. I am constantly online, doing a million different things, and the Nextbook Flexx 11 has been fast, consistent, and super easy to learn and navigate.
For under $250, the Nextbook Flexx 11 allows our entire family to stay connected, entertained, and productive, it is that simple. (That is if they can get it away from mom!) For more information, please visit NextBook USA.
Please stay tuned for our giveaway which will be live on July 8th!
