This is a guest post from a dear friend of mine as herself and her family visited the park and documented their fun and amazing trip! There were quite a few in her group that had never had the chance to visit Kings Dominion, so it was so fun for them as their first time!
Growing up in Southern Maryland, I have had the opportunity to visit Kings Dominion a couple of times with my family and we have always loved it! However, I have not been to the area in years and have not had the chance to introduce my husband and kids to the wonder of Kings Dominion. Luckily this past weekend, we had that chance!! I was super excited to experience Kings Dominion again, and this time with kids (and friends) in tow! Our entire group (myself, my husband, my mother in law, our teenage son, his friend, and our toddler daughter) was ready to spend the day riding roller coasters, water slides, and enjoying each others company!
Here is the group of our Kings Dominion First Timers!!! #KDFirstTimer
We arrived at opening, since that is the ONLY time to arrive to a theme park in my opinion. Parking was quick and easy and so was making our way into the park. We immediately rented a stroller for our toddler, which was a very simple process, stopped off for a height wristband, and off we went! Maps in hand, we started off for the roller coasters knowing those would be busier as the day went.
Our first stop for the big kids was Volcano: The Blast Coaster. Let me say…..the smiles on our teenagers’ faces when they stepped off that ride were priceless! They loved it! While the big kids were on Volcano, the littlest thrill seeker went off to begin checking out Planet Snoopy.
Planet Snoopy is over 14 ACRES of Peanuts fun. There are shows, rides, and even opportunities to meet the characters from Peanuts. I was really impressed with Planet Snoopy. The rides are geared towards the littlest KD fans, but our toddler wasn’t the only one who enjoyed them.
Kudos to KD for making kid rides that are fun for parents as well. We especially loved Flying Ace and Snoopy vs. Red Baron.
We split up and let the little ones continue to enjoy Planet Snoopy while our roller coaster riding crew continued on their thrill seeking adventure.
We thoroughly enjoyed all of the coasters, with Volcano being a family favorite. Since we had a little one waiting for us, we did wish that the rides gave us estimated wait times which we have seen at other parks. Luckily, we didn’t have too long of waits.
The all-new Delirium – new in 2016, this thrill ride will allow thrill seekers of all ages to fly through the air as they experience gravity-defying hang time. This was SUCH an amazing experience!!!
After a morning spent in Planet Snoopy and riding roller coasters, we enjoyed lunch at Panda Express near the Eiffel Tower. We sat outside near the water fountains and enjoyed the view. The food was very good but quite expensive. Not a place you want to pay to feed two teenage boys!
After lunch, we made our way over to Soak City to play in the water. All of the rides and attractions were well laid out and accessible. It was nice to have access to a locker for all of our bags. We all enjoyed the Lazy Rider and Big Wave Bay. Our teenagers flew down the big slides of the all new Hurricane Heights, while our toddler loved the age appropriate slides at the Soak City Splash House.
By early evening, our toddler was tuckered out and we made our way out of the park for rest time.
After resting at our hotel and having dinner, my husband and I decided to venture back for a couple more roller coasters. Again, parking and entering the park were a breeze. If you have the opportunity, ride the Dominator in the dark. WOW that adds a whole new aspect of fun to it! Also, you have to check out the Intimidator as it’s the fastest rollercoaster!!!
We had such a great time on our trip, we are considering purchasing season passes. There are so many benefits of being a season pass holder, including free parking, discounts on food and merchandise and even early entry into the park!
Kings Dominion really was a fantastic way to reconnect as a family. There were plenty of activities of all thrill level to satisfy all of us. I cannot wait to go back! Of course this was only a little sneak peek into the park, if you’d like to see more, check out all of the other “Things To Do.”

I've never been there. It sounds like a good place to take the kids.

Ahhhh, I GREW UP going to this park! I'm from Northern VA and would go to this park multiple times a year when I was younger. I haven't been in awhile, but I loved the Shockwave, the stand up roller coaster that as of August of last year was torn down :( I am planning on going back to the park next season, mayne I'll see you there!
